Description
|
Color.
Dark reddish brown.
|
Female.
Head. Vertex with a row of lateral tubercles and two pairs of median tubercles; first antennal flagellomere about
1.6 times the length of the pedicel.
Thorax. Pronotum subrectangular, lateral margins and disc with numerous tuberculate spines; mesonotu about 1.1 times
the length of the pronotum, slightly more spinose.
Abdomen. Posterolateral angles of abdominal tergites II-VIII terminating in acute spines, tergites V-IX with faint
posteromedian swellings and X obscurely carinate apically, rounded.
Praeopercular organ very large; subgenital plate reaching beyond the middle of abdominal segment X, smooth, scoop-like, broadly
rounded apically.
Wings. Tegmina short, the tubercles obtuse, posterior margin oblique; hindwings reduced and reaching at most to only
slightly beyond abdominal segment II, usually extremely reduced and reaching only slightly beyond the posterior margin of the
median segment; when larger, the hindwing posterior area is light tan in color.
|
Male.
Head Vertex granulate; first antennal flagellomere 1.5 times the length of the pedicel.
Thorax. Lateral margins and disc of the pronotum granulate.
Abdomen Abdominal tegite X deeply emarginate apically. Subgenital plate with an acute apical carina; vomer broad,
medially sulcate, lateral margins swollen, apex rounded, flat.
Wings. Tegmina with the posterior margin slightly sinuate; hindwings fully developed, reaching to the middle of
abdominal segment VII.

Systematic notes.
There is a considerable variability in this species, especially in the female, which may have the tegmina and wings reduced
to small stubs or almost fully developed. I agree fully with Redtenbacher’s synonymy of cubensis with poeyi.
His type specimen of longipennis is merely an immature female of this species. Rehn’s antillarum was a
replacement name for Saussure’s preoccupied name, cubensis.
I have examined five males and four females.
