Description
Color.
Green to grayish, sometimes variegated.
Female.
Head.  Vertex unequally swollen, the dextral horn carinate and spinose, the sinistral one smaller, the rest of the head tuberculate or spinose, with a row of four regularly spaced spines at the posterior margin.
Thorax.  Pronotum with two small tubercles or spines just before the median sulcus and four regularly spaced spines along the posterior margin, the median pair of which may be larger; mesonotum with a pair of large spines at the anterior margin and numerous smaller spines. Meso- and metasterna tuberculate. Meso- and metapleurae spinose, although sometimes this may be quite insignificant.
Abdomen.  Tergites II-IV with paired retrorse spines apically, VII dilated posterolaterally, X carinate, apex broadly emarginate. Supraanal plate carinate, apex broadly emarginate. Subgenital plate elongate.
Legs.  Lower median carina of anterior femora with two, of middle femora with four, and of posterior femora with five spines, superior lateral carinae of middle and posterior femora sometimes with small subapical foliaceous lobes; lower median carina of middle and posterior tibiae apically strongly serrate; posterior first tarsomere a little longer than the next two together.
Wings.  Tegmina green; hindwings reaching a little beyond the middle of the median segment, anterior area olive or green, posterior area hyaline, the veins with dark markings.
Male.
Head  Vertex slightly unequally swollen, sparsely granulate.
Thorax.  Pronotum smooth; mesonotum with a pair of strong, anteriorly directed, black spines at the anterior margin (these may sometimes be compound), surface granulate. Mesosternum granulate; metasternum smooth. Meso- and metapleurae granulate.
Abdomen  Tergite VIII expanded distally, X with apex rounded on each side of the median emargination. Subgenital plate apically slightly emarginate. Cerci slender, straight.
Legs.  Slenderer than in the female, lower median carinae of the femora similarly spined; lower median carinae of middle and posterior tibiae spinose apically.
Wings.  Tegmina green, with the anterior margin white; hindwings reaching to abdominal segment VII, anterior area colored the same as the tegmina, posterior area rose-colored, the veins not darkened.

Systematic notes.
Drury’s illustration of the male of jamaicensis did not exhibit the black spines at the anterior of the mesonotum, but I am inclined to believe that this was due to their being broken off or undeveloped. Bispinosa, as figured by Shaw, clearly has those spines. Glabricollis, pulverulentus, and murinus are just variations on the Bauplan of female jamaicensis.
I have examined 21 males and 25 females.
