Description
|
|
Color. Pinned, the male is brown, the female grayish brown.
|
Male. Immature.
Head with two short black-tipped spines.
Pronotum glabrous; mesonotum with numerous tubercles or short black-tipped spines.
Mesosternum with a few scattered small tubercles; metasternum smooth.
Mesopleurae granulate; metapleurae green, punctate.
Abdominal segment X emarginate apically.
Legs with lower median carina of anterior femora with two spines, middle femora with four, and
posterior femora with five; posterior first tarsomere longer than the next three together.
Tegmina with the anterior margin bearing a narrow white stripe, then a quite broad brown band,
innermost portion bright green; wing reach to abdominal segment VI, anterior area colored as
the tegmina, posterior area hyaline.
Female. Head unequally bispinulose, a few small granules behind.
Pronotum with numerous black-tipped tuberculate spines; mesonotum with numerous similar spines.
Mesoternum with numerous black tubercles; metasternum with a pair of tubercles.
Meso- and metapleurae with many short black spines.
Abdominal tergites II-IV posteriorly smooth, VII slightly dilated posterolaterally, X
medially carinate, apex subtruncate.
Supraanal plate carinate, triangular.
Subgenital plate very elongate, naviculate.
Legs elongate, with lower median carina of anterior femora with two spines, middle femora with four, and
posterior femora with five; posterior first tarsomere longer than the next three together.
Tegmina present; wings short, reaching about as far as the middle of the median segment.

The end of the subgenital plate is damaged.

Systematic notes.
It is unfortunate that the last few segments of the male abdomen are broken off in both specimens because
this is the first time that the male of this species has been described. The male described by
Bolivar (1888) does not even belong to Diapherodes;
it is the male of Hesperophasma poeyi (Saussure).
I have examined two males and three females.
