Description
General form.
Body granulose and with scattered small tubercles.
Color.
Light brown to a dark reddish brown..
Female.
Head.  Vertex with scattered tubercles; first antennal flagellomere about 1.4 times the length of the pedicel.
Thorax.  Pronotum narrower anteriorly than posteriorly, lateral margins and disc tuberculate; mesonotum with small tubercles on the disc, lateral margins tuberculate in the anterior half.
Abdomen.  Tergites II-IX and the median segment each with a small, transverse posteromedian swelling, X medially carinate. Subgenital plate reaching the middle of abdominal segment X, smooth, scoop-like, broadly rounded apically.
Wings.  Tegminal and alar remnants present on the meso- and metanota, but very reduced.
Male.
Smaller and slenderer than the female.
Abdomen  Tergites without the posteromedian swelling, segments VIII-X broader than the preceding. Vomer large, medially grooved, apex broad, truncate.
Geographic distribution.
Throughout the Bahamas.
Type material.
    M. androsensis.
        An immature female. Key No. 4 N. Side of S. Bight. Andros I. May 23, 04. Am. Mus.
        Nat. Hist. Dept. Invert. Zool. No. 20485. [ AMNH ].
        Rehn originally thought that the type was a male.
Systematic notes.
When Rehn described the species, he erected the genus Malacomorpha for it, distinguishing the new genus from Anisomorpha by Malacomorpha having ocelli. There are no ocelli, nor are there any other characters of sufficient weight to warrant a separate genus for androsensis.
I have examined 16 males and 12 females.
